Spotlight on Majors: Communication

Recently, one of our counselors attended a college fair, when a student came to visit the Ripon College table. This student said he was interested in studying Communication, but he wasn’t sure what he could do with a Communication degree. The answer is: Anything. Communication is a versatile degree because it is in every career field. Students have worked for colleges, sport teams, news stations, hospitals, and even U.S. Presidential Campaigns. How we communicate and the express ideas is extremely important to the success groups whether it’s in the classroom, a small business, a non-profit organization, or a multibillion dollar company. Knowing how to share formation clearly and efficiently is a powerful skill set in today’s job market.

The study of communication at Ripon is a balance between theory and practice. Our Professors believe they have to teach our students not only about advanced theories and the history of communication, but also how to apply theories in practical application, not just in the classroom. Communication students are required in their junior year to pursue an internship through a company or non-profit organization. The students return in their senior year with these practical experiences and become mentors for younger communication students by assisting professors in lower level classes.

Students who do pursue the Communication major at Ripon College will also have some unique opportunities. Students have attended conferences where they can present their own research and listen to speakers in their fields of interest. We’ve had a student write a chapter in a book on football about how the NFL helped people cope after tragic events such as 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina. Through the experience of researching football and having her chapter published in a book, she was able to get her dream job of working for the Green Bay Packers.

Communication is a major that can truly take you anywhere you want to go. If you’re interested in learning more, click here to be taken to the Communication Department’s page on ripon.edu. Also feel free to contact any of our Professors if you have any more questions about the department.
