How fitting that our “Admitted Student of the Week” was once a Badger Boy on campus! Grant VerKuilen from Appleton, Wisconsin was on campus only a year ago as he learned about politics and government through the Badger Boys State program. Now Grant will be joining the Ripon College family this fall as a Future Red Hawk!

Grant is an exceptional young man. When he was in high school he participated in Football, Tennis, Mock Trial, Legends (History Club), A-Team (Sports Leadership Club), and National Honor Society. When he comes to Ripon in the fall he’s really looking forward to getting on football field. “Since I tore my ACL in the second game of my senior year, I have been itching just to get back onto that field; even if it is just practice,” said Grant.  Outside of school Grant volunteers with Miracle League of the Fox Valley where he helps people with physical and mental handicaps play baseball, he works at Festival Foods, and works the scoreboard and down markers for Pop Warner football.

Now while playing for the Red Hawks is important, Grant is excited by the prospects of pursuing his education at Ripon as well. “As far as a career is concerned, I have always wanted to be a teacher since eight grade. Going through high school only strengthened that desire with how greatly my teachers impacted my life. I want to do the same,” said Grant, “I never knew what subject I would want to teach until sometime during my junior year when I realized how much history fascinated me.” While he’s excited, he’s hoping to deter a dangerous high school habit. “I can be a procrastinator so I am worried that my tendency to wait till the last minute might hurt me. It is a habit I grew into in high school and hopefully will grow out of in college.” Don’t worry Grant, your coaches and professors will definitely make sure you’re on the ball when it comes to your school work!

Besides his aspirations for football and teaching, Grant also has another life goal. “I have a goal to attend at least one of every sporting event at every level. I have already checked off many from my list including an NFL game,  NBA game, NCAA football, Indy Car Racing, MLB game, and many more.” There is one goal he doesn’t want, having to do anything with potatoes. “I cannot physically swallow baked or mashed potatoes and do not like anything potato related such as potato chips, French fries, etc.”  Luckily Grant, our Commons is filled with MANY other options so no need to worry!

With graduation only happening last week, Grant is just beginning his summer but is looking forward to a Wisconsin Dells trip with his good friends near the end of the month. And we’re excited to have him joining us this fall. Congrats on being our “Admitted Student of the Week” Grant!
