Even though he’ll be joining us from across the country (he’s from L.A.), we think Jorge Gutierrez is going to fit into Wisconsin just fine. “…I put cheese on almost everything. I love cheese,” said Jorge. Yep, he’s definitely going to be right at home.

The one-time senior from Bridge Star Secondary Charter Academy (or BSSCA for short) will be joining as a member of the Class of 2017. In high school he was involved in volunteer programs, played the guitar in house band, art club, and the West Program which gave the opportunity to a couple of students to attending a community college while in High School so they could earn college credits. Outside of school he volunteered through church and other local groups, but of course like a typical young man he hung out with friends, played music, skateboarded, and liked attending shows and concerts. Speaking of concerts, did you know Jorge has a band? He said one of his proudest accomplishments was “Performing with my band for “The Forum,” an educator’s conference made up of teachers and administrators from all over the US.” That’s awesome Jorge. Maybe you can start a band here in Ripon? When it comes to music he really enjoys everything from India Rock to Big Band music with some of his favorite artists ranging between Muse to Frank Sinatra.

Jorge is also a traveler. He did visit Ripon earlier this year in 2013, but he has to say his favorite vacation was in 2012. “I flew to the East Coast with a couple of friends and we visited a handful of colleges while enjoying many tourist attractions like Fenway Park in Boston, Geno’s Steak in Philly, Times Square, the Washington Monument, and even a Bruce Springsteen concert in New Jersey,” said Jorge. “This was then I realized I wanted to go to college out of state.” Jorge also has traveled to Arizona where he hiked 25+ miles down to the Havasupai Indian Reservation. But in almost a month’s time, Jorge will be making the trip to Ripon College!

We asked Jorge to share something important about himself and this is what he had to say, (We really liked the whole quote): “I really like LA. There’s always a play or a movie to watch. There’s a dozen concerts and shows every day. There’s Hollywood. There are amusement parks. I’m a bus away from the beach and a drive away from the snow. But, lately I’ve been feeling a little overwhelmed from the city life. I grew up in a small town in Mexico, one similar to Ripon in many ways, and I think that a change of scenery might do me some good. Ever since I came to the U.S. ten years ago, I have not felt at home. Home is knowing your neighbors and waving a stranger hello as you walk down the street. Home is the smell of burning wood on a cold winter night and the sound of water crashing down a narrow stream. There’s so much beauty in simplicity. I hope to make Ripon a home.”

We can’t wait to have you join us in the fall Jorge. Ripon definitely is a place to call home and we know you’ll be a great addition to our Red Hawk family. Have a great rest of the summer and see you soon!
